MLA Style and Formatting

Citing work with a tutor, writing center fellow, parent or peer.

Format:

Last name of person you met with, First name. Where you met with them/context of the meeting. Date of the meeting.


Examples:
Glick, Olivia. Writing Center Help. 11 October 2023.

Patterson, Richard. Revision help with dissertation. 19 October 2023.

Citing an AI tool that helps you edit your writing (i.e. Grammarly)

Format:

Type of help. Name of Tool,  Date of tool use.

 

Example:

Grammar and word usage. Grammarly, October 19, 2023. 

 

If you aren't sure what type of help you used, here are some examples:

  • Grammar help
  • Rearranging sentences (tool suggested moving things around but not changing your words)
  • Word usage 
  • Engagement or delivery (tool helped you change the tone or style of the writing)

Citing an AI generator

 

Format:

"Prompt you used" prompt. Name of Tool, Version of tool used, Publisher of tool, Date chat was generated, URL. 

 

Examples:

"In 200 words, describe the symbolism of the green light in The Great Gatsby” follow-up prompt to list sources. ChatGPT, 13 Feb. version, OpenAI, 9 Mar. 2023, chat.openai.com/chat.

“Pointillist painting of a sheep in a sunny field of blue flowers” prompt, DALL-E, version 2, OpenAI, 8 Mar. 2023, labs.openai.com/.
